Here’s how we can respond earlier to acute kidney injury in sepsis—potentially before it even occurs—using a risk assessment test.

  • Overview

Sepsis is a risk factor for acute kidney injury,1-5 which can lead to irreversible kidney damage if it’s not diagnosed in a timely manner.6 Fortunately, two biomarkers have been identified that the kidney begins to express as soon as it starts to undergo duress before damage occurs,7,8 and these biomarkers have been incorporated into the VIDAS® NEPHROCHECK® assay, which is the first FDA-approved risk assessment test for critically ill patients aged 21 years and older who have acute cardiovascular or respiratory compromise.7 Learn more about how this test works and the critical importance of diagnosing acute kidney injury in sepsis patients as early as possible with Drs. Devendra Amin and John Ofenloch. Dr. Amin is Medical Director of Critical Care Services at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida, and Dr. Ofenloch is a cardiothoracic surgeon at the Center for Advanced Structural Heart and Valve Care at Morton Plant Hospital in Clearwater, Florida.
